July 2010:

GOGO July –

Alsace wines

Ready to cool off with some refreshing white wines in tall slender bottles? This month we are focusing our attention on wines from Alsace, France.

The Alsace region has historically been disputed territory between France and Germany, and has changed hands several times.  This isolated area is separated from the rest of France by the Vosges Mountains, and the unique culture and language of Alsace bear Germanic influence.  The Rhine River separates Alsace from Germany, where steep vineyards on riverside hills grow some of the most singular white wines in the world. The cool climate in this region makes it especially well-suited for the production of white wines.

The Grapes of Alsace

A long cool growing season and an average rainfall that is one of the lowest in France nurture a narrow vineyard strip that runs north-south along the contours of the Vosges mountains.  There are a variety of soil types in Alsatian vineyards, and farmers pride themselves on growing grapes that allow that terroir to shine through.  Ninety percent of wines from Alsace are white.

Riesling: light-bodied, and almost invariably bone dry, floral, crisp acidity, pure fruit, minerally with a long finish.

Gewurztraminer: rich weight, usually dry to off dry, low acidity, spicy, floral, flavors of lychee fruit and peach.

Pinot Blanc: reliable ripener, produces clean, dry, fruity whites.

Pinot Gris: plush-bodied style, and often off-dry; shows notes of peach, apricot, and smoke.  This is the same grape that Italy calls Pinot Grigio, though the wine made from it is very different in style.

Muscat: Alsatian Muscat is always dry with a fresh, floral aroma; young, crisp, and fruity.

Residual Sugar

The sweetness in some of these whites was not added to the wine.  The sugar in the wine is the sugar that was originally in the grape juice.  In the fermentation process, yeast converts sugar into alcohol.  In a dry wine, all of the sugar molecules are fermented into alcohol.  But if the fermentation process is stopped along the way, you get a wine with a bit of residual sugar (and a lower alcohol level). Yum!

Foods to Accompany these Wines

Alsatian wines are astoundingly versatile.  Despite being light and delicate, they really stand up to assertive foods such as onions and sausage (frequently found in Alsatian cuisine).  What’s more, these whites are subtle enough not to overpower the delicate flavors of sushi…  And they always make a great aperitif!

Domaine Weinbach “Cuvée Théo” Gewurztraminer 2008 $36.99 ($31.44 with GOGO discount)

An incredibly rich and viscous Gewurztraminer that shows exceptional detail and showcases flavors of fresh fruit sap and carmelized peaches.  Lovely balancing acidity makes for an elegantly styled, dry Gewurztraminer.  Weinbach’s wines, made by two sisters, are known for their bio-dynamically farmed grapes.

Most Interesting:

Marcel Hugg “Altenberg de Bergheim” Grand Cru Riesling 2005 $34.99 ($29.74 with GOGO discount)

A lean and clean, dry-style Riesling with kinky minerally notes.  Look for classic fruit aromatics of apple and peaches, complimented by a refreshing and distinct petrol finish.

Friendliest:

Willm Gewurtraminer 2008 $14.99 ($12.74 with GOGO discount)

Full-bodied and charming with aromas of lychee fruit and roses, Willm’s Gewurztraminer is barely off- dry, and makes a beautiful aperitif as well as a match for Asian or Indian food.

Best Bargain:

Helfrich Riesling 2007 $12.99 ($11.04 with GOGO discount)

From a strong vintage, this bottling shows aromas of crisp green apple without even a hint of sweetness.  The body is marked by great vibrancy and balance, and a touch of petrol rounds out the finish.
